Getting the keys to a new home is exciting. Then you open the kitchen cabinets and find crumbs, a sticky shelf and someone else's dust. Even when the previous occupants cleaned before leaving, "clean enough to move out" is rarely the same as "clean enough to move in."
A move-in cleaning gives you a true fresh start. Here's why it matters, what it should include and how to time it so your move goes smoothly.
Why clean before you unpack?
It's the only time the home is empty
Once furniture and boxes come in, there are areas you won't reach again for years: inside cabinets before dishes go in, closet shelves before clothes are hung, floors under the spot where the couch will sit. An empty home is the easiest home to clean thoroughly.
You don't know what the last occupant used
Previous owners or tenants may have had pets, smoked, cooked with lots of oil or simply had different standards. A move-in clean removes their dust, dander and residue so your home starts with your own baseline.
It protects your belongings
Putting clean dishes into dusty cabinets or folding clothes onto grimy shelves undoes your work immediately. Cleaning first means everything you unpack stays clean.
It makes the new place feel like yours
There's a psychological side, too. Walking into a home that smells fresh and looks spotless helps it feel like home faster.
What a move-in cleaning should include
Because the home is empty, a move-in clean can be very thorough:
- Inside and outside of every kitchen cabinet and drawer
- Inside the oven, on and under the stovetop
- Inside the fridge and freezer
- Countertops, sink, backsplash and range hood
- Bathroom fixtures, tubs, showers, tile and grout
- Inside vanities and medicine cabinets
- Inside closets and on shelves
- Baseboards, door frames and doors
- Window sills and tracks
- Light switches and outlet covers
- Vacuuming and mopping all floors, including edges and corners
Timing your move-in clean
The ideal window is after you receive the keys and before the movers arrive. Even a single day between closing (or lease start) and moving day makes a big difference.
If that's not possible, try to schedule the clean for the morning of the move, before the truck arrives, and ask the movers to start with the rooms we've finished. Communication is key — let us know your timeline and we'll plan around it.
A few timing tips
- Schedule painting or small repairs before the cleaning, so dust and debris are cleaned up too.
- If floors are being refinished, clean after the finish has cured.
- For apartments, check building rules for elevator reservations and parking so the cleaner can access the unit easily.
Moving to Lowell?
Lowell has every type of home: brick mill-building lofts downtown, multi-family homes in the Highlands and Centralville, single-family houses in Belvidere and Pawtucketville, and plenty of apartment complexes. Older homes often hold dust in radiators, trim and window tracks; newer units may have construction residue. We adjust our approach to the home in front of us.
Do it yourself or hire a pro?
If you have time between closing and moving day, you can certainly do a move-in clean yourself. Plan for it to take longer than you expect — usually a full day for an average home — and bring more supplies than you think you'll need.
Many people choose professional help because moving week is already overwhelming: packing, utilities, address changes, work, kids, pets. Handing off the clean means you can focus on everything else and walk into a home that's ready.
