Every lease and purchase agreement is different, so always read yours. But most walkthroughs focus on the same areas:

• Kitchen appliances: inside the oven, fridge and microwave
• Inside cabinets and drawers
• Bathrooms: toilets, tubs, showers, grout and mirrors
• Floors, especially edges and corners
• Baseboards and walls (scuffs and marks)
• Windows, sills and tracks
• Closets and shelves

Leaving these clean doesn't guarantee your deposit — damage and lease terms are separate issues — but it removes the most common cleaning-related deductions.

A move-out cleaning checklist

Kitchen

• Empty and wipe inside every cabinet and drawer
• Clean inside the oven and under the stovetop burners
• Empty, defrost if needed, and wipe the fridge and freezer
• Clean the microwave inside and out
• Degrease the range hood and backsplash
• Scrub the sink and polish the faucet
• Wipe countertops and cabinet fronts
• Vacuum and mop the floor, including under the fridge if it can be moved safely

Bathrooms

• Scrub toilets inside and out, including the base
• Remove soap scum from tubs, showers and glass
• Clean grout and caulk lines
• Empty and wipe vanities and medicine cabinets
• Polish mirrors and fixtures
• Wipe exhaust fan covers
• Mop floors and wipe baseboards

Bedrooms and living areas

• Clean inside closets and shelves
• Wipe baseboards, door frames and doors
• Wipe light switches and outlet covers
• Clean window sills and tracks
• Remove cobwebs from ceilings and corners
• Vacuum carpets and mop hard floors

When to schedule your move-out clean

The best time is after the movers have taken everything out and before your final walkthrough or closing. Cleaning an empty home is faster and far more thorough than cleaning around boxes.

Tips to make move-out day easier

• Keep a small "cleaning kit" unpacked: gloves, a few cloths, trash bags and a vacuum. Or better, let the cleaners bring everything.

• Take photos of each room after cleaning, in case there are questions later.
• Patch small nail holes and touch up paint before the clean, so the dust gets cleaned up too.
• Leave keys, garage openers and manuals in an obvious spot.
