Post-Construction Cleaning: From Dusty to Dream-Home Ready

By Liseli Pizzo ·

The contractor packs up, the last tool leaves the driveway and your new kitchen, bathroom or addition is finally done. Then you notice it: a fine layer of dust on everything. On the counters. Inside the brand-new cabinets. On the light fixtures, window sills and floors — and somehow in rooms nobody worked in.

Post-construction cleaning is the step between "the work is done" and "the project is finished." Here's why renovation dust is so stubborn, what a proper post-construction clean includes, and how to schedule it.

Why construction dust is different

Regular household dust is mostly fibers, skin flakes and pollen. Construction dust contains fine particles from drywall, sanding, wood cutting, tile and grout. Those particles are much smaller, they stay in the air longer, and they travel into every room through doorways and vents.

That's why you can wipe a counter and find a new film on it the next morning. The dust keeps settling until it's removed from every surface — high to low — and the air has a chance to clear.

What post-construction cleaning includes

A thorough post-construction clean works from the top of the room down, so dust that falls is caught on the next pass:

High surfaces

  • Ceiling corners and light fixtures
  • Tops of door frames, window trim and molding
  • Ceiling fans and vent covers
  • Tops of cabinets and shelves

Walls, cabinets and fixtures

  • Walls wiped where dust has settled
  • Inside and outside of new cabinets and drawers
  • Countertops, sinks and faucets
  • Appliances, inside and out
  • Switch plates and outlet covers
  • Removal of stickers and light residue
  • Windows, sills and tracks

Floors

  • Vacuuming all floors, edges and corners
  • Mopping and detailing hard floors
  • A final pass to catch dust that settled during the clean

What it doesn't include

Post-construction cleaning is detailed cleaning, not demolition cleanup. Heavy debris, scrap material and dumpster haul-away are usually handled by the contractor. It's worth confirming this in your contract so nothing falls through the gaps.

Some surfaces may also need a specialist — for example, heavy paint or adhesive on delicate stone. We'll always tell you up front if something is outside what we can safely clean.

When to schedule it

After the trades, before the furniture

The best moment is when all trades are finished and heavy debris is gone, but before you move furniture, rugs and décor back in. That gives us clear access to every surface.

Consider a second pass

On larger projects, fine dust can continue to settle for a few days. A lighter second clean after a short wait catches anything left in the air. We'll let you know if we think it's worth it for your project.

Coordinate with your contractor

If you have a final walkthrough with your contractor, schedule the clean beforehand. It's much easier to spot finish issues — paint lines, grout gaps, scratches — on a clean surface.

Tips for living through a renovation

  • Seal off work areas with plastic sheeting and keep doors closed when possible.
  • Cover or close HVAC vents in the work area, and change your furnace filter after the project.
  • Store dishes, linens and clothing away from the work zone or in sealed bins.
  • Run an air purifier if you have one.

These steps reduce the spread, but they rarely stop it entirely — which is why a professional clean at the end makes such a difference.

Renovations in Lowell homes

Many homes in Lowell are older, with plaster walls, wood trim and radiators. Renovations in these homes can release plaster dust that clings to trim and radiators for weeks. Newer condos and additions bring drywall dust and sticker residue on new fixtures. We adjust our approach to the materials in your home.
